I wanted to get to know Netherlands bit better, I decided to visit Amsterdam and Rotterdam. According to my preferences, I liked Rotterdam more, so I’ll start with it first. Check why.
Rotterdam has a distinct city vibe while Amsterdam is more of a town. Amsterdam has centuries-old architecture, coffee-shops and liberal attitude to life and Rotterdam has striking modern architecture, world-class dining and a very cool, laid back feel. I was amazed with architecture in Rotterdam.
Building are so iconic. Featuring both historical buildings and modern architecture, these selected iconic landmarks show why Rotterdam is the architecture capital of the Netherlands.
I went to Amsterdam. It isn’t what the media may portray it as. Amsterdam is a city of perpetual canals, iconic architecture and amazing history. There is no getting away from it – Amsterdam is a lowland metropolis with very flat ground. This is why it makes it a perfect city for cycling everywhere. This is what thousands of natives do every day.
I also wanted to see historical windmills; windmills in Holland served many purposes. The most important probably was pumping water out of the lowlands and back into the rivers beyond the dikes so that the land could be farmed. In the fourteenth century, hollow-post mills were used to drive scoop wheels to drain the wetlands.
Both cities, so different, and so nice. I will finish with a minimalistic picture of nature.
Netherlands has two beautiful cities, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, but in a different way.
